SAIT takes the win in the first game of the final series
The Olds College Broncos women’s hockey team lost 4-2 against the SAIT Trojans at the “Graduating student-athlete” and last home game of the regular season on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at the Olds Sportsplex.

The Broncos started the period off with a penalty to Payton Bowen for hooking at 2:54. Broncos fight off the penalty having 4 shots on net. Kassy Gaudette from the Broncos picked up a penalty for body checking at 5:53 and they held Sait to only 2 shots on their powerplay. SAIT penalty for number 12, Ashton Holmes for interference at 10:03. Goal scored by Broncos Karli Frederick at 11:30 from Maddy Black and Jesse Jack on the powerplay. SAIT penalty at 13:47 number 20, Bryn Hill for high sticking. Broncos penalty for Kali Cummings at 14:42 for body checking. Shot and goal for the SAIT Trojans at 16:07 by Karys Woodward on the powerplay with assists from Karmen Mooney and Kelsey Patterson. The Broncos second goal was scored by Kali Cummings from Maddy Black at 17:34. The first period finished with the Broncos leading the Trojans 2-1.
Shots after the first period were 10 for the SAIT Trojans and 9 for the Broncos.
The second period opened with another early penalty at 1:03 as Fiona Milligan picks up a cross checking penalty after a scrum in front of Lexi Bruce. The Broncos hold off SAIT's power play with 4 shots. At 8:44 Kelsey Patterson of the Trojans scored to tie up the game at 2-2 assisted by Tashel Scantlebury. After the goal SAIT picked up a penalty at 9:36 to Brynn Ferguson for hooking. SAIT held off a strong Broncos power play, holding them to 2 shots. Quickly after the first penalty ended Karys Woodward from SAIT picked up a body checking penalty at 12:07. SAIT holds off another Broncos power play, keeping the Broncos to only 2 shots. Lexi Bruce comes out at 15:45 to stop a breakaway attempt by Kelsey Patterson, with a strong backing from her defence to block a second scoring attempt on the wide open net. At 18:09 Kassy Gaudette got caught with a kneeing penalty in front of the net attempting to hold off a scoring opportunity for the Trojans.
Olds College Broncos end the second period with 9 shots on net bringing their game total to 18 and the Trojans with 13 shots on net bringing their game total to 23.
SAIT opened the third with a penalty to Hailey McCallum for interference at 2:28. Olds penalty to Brynne Doerksen for interference at 6:06. At 7:29 SAIT evened up the power play to 4 on 4 with a penalty to Davina Mcloed for interference. Kaylin Schellenberg stopped a big breakaway opportunity by Bree Edwards at 8:00. Olds gets caught with a high sticking penalty to Jesse Jack at 9:05. Kassy Gaudette gets caught with a boarding penalty at 10:35 bringing the Broncos to a 5 on 3 penalty kill. On the 5 on 3 power play Kelsey Patterson scores her third of the game giving the Trojans a late 3-2 lead, assist to Karmen Mooney. SAIT penalty at 13:55 to Tashel Scantlebury for body contact. Another SAIT penalty at 17:22 to Kelsey Patterson for tripping. Giving the Broncos an opportunity to call their time out and strategize while being down 1 with 2:38 to go in the third. At 17:22 Lexi Bruce is pulled out of the net giving the Broncos another skater to hopefully score and tie it up. However at 19:59 SAIT's Kelsey Patterson is able to get by the defence and score an empty net goal making the score 4-2 for the SAIT Trojans.
Final shots for the night were 39-26 for the SAIT Trojans
Player of the Game for the SAIT Trojans was number 25, Karmen Mooney and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Olds College Broncos was number 10, Kali Cummings.
The Broncos started very strong in the first period, skating hard and scoring two goals to lead the Trojans going into the second. Kelsy Patterson of the Torjans was able to tie up the score in the second at 8:44. The third period saw the Broncos give it their all in an attempt to score or keep the Trojans from scoring. SAIT ultimately was able to score twice in the third in order to take the score to 4-2 and win over the Olds College Broncos.
