Broncos big 2-1 win over the NAIT Ooks
The Olds College Broncos women’s hockey team won against the NAIT Ooks at the “Cystic Fibrosis Awareness” game on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Olds Sportsplex.

The first period started with NAIT Ooks number 28, Bethany Connelly being sent to the penalty box for holding the stick at 5:16. Olds College first penalty of the night went to Brekell Otto for interference at 9:46. The Ooks followed up with a call for tripping on Bryana Merrill at 9:53. Broncos athlete Danica Dahlin was called for body checking at 17:49. This sent the Ooks into a power play that ultimately would be successful. NAIT's first goal, scored on the power play by Kadey Rosie, assisted by number 4, Bryanna Merrill and Myah Mindus at 18:40.
After twenty minutes of play the NAIT Ooks lead the Broncos 1-0. Shots on net were 10 for NAIT, 6 for the Broncos.
NAIT Ooks number 11, Livia Lucova was sent to the penalty box at 10:57 for body checking. This gave the Broncos the power play opportunity they needed and they were able to use it, scoring their first goal of the night. The power play goal was scored by number 14, Mairyn Tucker at 11:37, assisted by Brianna Marsh and Keera Tiringer.
Broncos were able to tie up the score 1-1 in the second period with 8 shots for Olds and 4 shots on net for the NAIT Ooks.
Last period started with an early penalty for the NAIT Ooks. Hannah Piket was called for tripping at 2:19. Again, the Broncos took advantage of the power play and came out successful with Brianna Marsh scoring at 2:26 with assists from Shauna Johnson and Maddy Black. With that Broncos take the lead 2-1 over the NAIT Ooks. Broncos number 6, Danica Dahlin was called for body checking at 7:17 and shortly after Brekell Otto was called for cross checking at 14:41.
Shots for the third period was 7 for NAIT and 5 for the Broncos for a game total of 21-19 for the Ooks.
Player of the Game for the NAIT Ooks was number 4, Bryanna Merrill and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Olds College Broncos was number 15, Shauna Johnson.
This matchup saw both teams taking full advantage of their power play opportunities. NAIT scored their first goal on the power play at 18:40 by Rosie from Merrill and Mindus. Leading over the Broncos going into the second Olds knew they had to take their opportunity when it was given to them and they did, scoring on the power play at 11:37. Broncos and the Ooks were tied going into the third and both teams were prepared to battle it out to get the win. Ultimately, the Olds College Broncos were successful scoring their second goal of the night on the power play at 2:26. The Broncos were able to hold their ground and come out with the win.
