Red Deer College Queens take down Broncos 4-2
Four unanswered goals lead to Queens comeback over Broncos
The Red Deer College Queens (2-2) picked up their second win in as many nights on Friday evening in Olds, taking down the Broncos (2-2) 4-2 thanks to four unanswered goals.
Jade Petrie scored twice in the game, the second of which being the eventual game winner, while teammates Catherine Longchamps and Jordyn Burgar each added one of their own in the contest. Meanwhile Olds College Broncos' skaters Krista Wilson and Faith Volk picked up the home squad's tallies.
While the first period went by scoreless, the Broncos would get on the board first at the 2:17 mark of the second period. On an attempted centering pass from behind the opposing goal line, Broncos' veteran Krista Wilson fired a puck in front of the net which hit a body, and somehow managed to get behind goaltender Tracie Kikuchi.
The fluckey goal was followed by a beautiful goal just a minute later. The Broncos increased their lead to two after a workhorse type effort from Kali Cummings. With Red Deer attempting to move the puck out of their zone, Cummings made a great skating effort to intercept the pass before laying a shot on the net. The rebound came straight to Faith Volk in front who made no mistake, giving life to the Olds Sportsplex
The celebration was short lived. Just a minute later a missed assignment in front led to Catherine Longchamps finding the puck and beating Broncos' goalie Catalina Hartland to cut the lead in half. Four minutes later the Queens struck again, as Jade Petrie fired a shot from outside the slot past Hartland to knot the game at two.
The Queens scored their third straight goal just a minute and a half into the final frame. A shot from inside the blue line made its way to goaltender Hartland who miss-played the rebound right to Queens forward Jordyn Burger who was staring straight into an open cage. Burger made no mistake with the tap-in to give her team the lead.
Adding an insurance marker late was Jade Petrie, who found the puck behind the net, found her way in front and slipped a tricky one through Hartland's five-hole.
Hartland stopped 20 of 24 shots faced in the loss while ex-Bronco Tracie Kikuchi picked up the win vs. her former team by stopping 16 of the 18 pucks tossed her way.
The Broncos will have another chance to win on home ice next Thursday, October 19 as the NAIT Nooks come to town. Meanwhile the Queens will return home to face the SAIT Trojans.
