Broncos Welcome New Women’s Basketball Head Coach
Olds College Broncos Athletics are excited to announce Mike Hansen as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program.
Mike Hansen (BA ‘96, BEd ‘99, MEd ‘09) brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the Broncos, with a career spanning youth, high school, collegiate and professional basketball.
Hansen has coached extensively at both the college and high school levels in Alberta. Most recently, he served as head coach of the University of Lethbridge’s men’s basketball program from 2013 to 2019. During his six seasons with the Pronghorns, Hansen guided the program back to national relevance, compiling a 71-50 Canada West record and an overall mark of 113-95 — the second-most wins in program history. The Pronghorns reached the playoffs in five of six seasons, highlighted by a trip to the Canada West Final Four in 2018, their first appearance since 2001.
Prior to joining the University of Lethbridge, Hansen spent five seasons in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) with Lethbridge College and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Hansen led his teams to five consecutive playoff appearances, earning ACAC bronze medals in 2009 and 2012, and a silver medal at the 2011 ACAC Championship. In 2011, Hansen guided Lethbridge College to a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) silver medal. Following the season, he was named ACAC Coach of the Year and received the Sportsman of the Year Award from the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame. He joined NAIT the following season, leading the Ooks to an ACAC bronze medal before stepping down due to family relocation.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Hansen has spent 12 years coaching at the high school level, making seven appearances at the provincial championships. Hansen has also contributed to Alberta’s provincial basketball program, serving as an assistant coach and helping Team Alberta capture a bronze medal at the 2001 Canada Games.
“Securing a coach of Mike Hansen’s caliber is a monumental win not just for our women’s basketball program, but for the entire Broncos Athletics department,” said Rachel Cunningham, Athletics Manager. “Mike is a proven winner whose track record in both the ACAC and U SPORTS speaks for itself. What truly sets him apart is his relentless competitive drive and his dedication to student-athlete development. He brings an elite level of competition and a wealth of knowledge that will elevate our culture. We are absolutely honored to welcome Mike and his family to the herd, and we can’t wait to see him lead this program into an exciting new era of excellence."
Hansen is eager to step into Broncos Country and create a lasting impact on the Broncos women’s basketball program. His family already has a winning basketball history in Olds as his wife Anne (Trenholm) attended Olds High School, winning a 3A Provincial Basketball Championship in 1991 before going on to Mount Royal where she was a CCAA All-Canadian.
"I'm excited to be joining Olds College and Broncos Athletics,” shared Hansen. “Our family has strong roots in the area and my wife and I are excited to build a family environment and a culture of excellence within the Broncos basketball program. My thanks to President Dr. Debbie Thompson and Athletics Manager, Rachel Cunningham, for believing in my ability to lead the Broncos women's basketball team. I can't wait to get started.”
The Broncos regular basketball season starts in October, and the future is exciting with Hansen at the helm.
