Athletes of the Week; Nov 27- Dec 3 PDF Print E-mail

Female Athlete of the Week- Becky Strause: Mixed Curling

Becky encompasses everything a Broncos athlete should be: positivity, desire and willingness to learn. With very little curling experience under her belt, Becky showed significant improvement in her curling skill throughout her first ever Bonspiel.

Becky’s attitude makes her a wonderful addition to Broncos Curling, no matter the situation Becky knows how to bring positive energy to her fellow teammates.

Male Athlete of the Week- Travis Paulgaard: Men's Curling

In the ACAC first Bonspiel of the year, Travis stepped up and took the lead for the Men’s curling team. With a new Broncos men’s team, and very little opportunity to practice as a team prior to the bonspiel, Travis excelled as a leader and showed the other ACAC teams, the Olds College Broncos are a force to be reckoned with.

After a shaky start to the weekend, Travis gained amazing confidence and made some fantastic calls and some even better shots to take a win over Lakeland Saturday evening and a significant win over a very strong NAIT team on Sunday morning.

Congratulations to both players!

Men's Team Captures Bronze! PDF Print E-mail

On the weekend of March 4-6, 2011 the Olds College Broncos Men's Team ventured to Vermilion, Alberta for the ACAC 2010-2011 Curling Provincials. The team had played strong throughout the Regionals with a 3-3 record in the Fall Regional and a 4-2 record at the Winter Regionals. Even with losing Second, Adam Wutzke, due to Academic Commitments, the team still felt confident picking up Connor Layton to fill the second spot on the team.

Veteran Skip Elliott Mansell, was determined to bring home the gold banner in his last year as an Olds College Bronco. However, with tough curling conditions, the Round Robin portion of Provincials did not fair well with the team. Not to be disheartend, the team were committed to coming out stronger than ever in their Bronze Medal Match against a strong Augustana Team, who were seeking revenge on the Broncos who took the Bronze Medal Match in the 2009-2010 Provincials in Augustana's home arena. The Broncos team came out determined and with strong communication, played their best game of the season. Each of the players made fantastic shots and put the pressure on the Augustana team early. There was little the Augustana team could do with the Broncos playing so well and making all the shots they needed to make.

Coming home with Bronze is a great feeling for the Broncos team and highlights what long hours of practice and working together as a team can accomplish.

The 2010-2011 ACAC Bronze Medal Team consists of:

Lead: Kory Roberge

Second: Connor Layton / Adam Wutzke

Third: Travis Paulgaard

Skip: Elliott Mansell

Coach: Gordon Cherry
