Weekend Wrap-Up, February 13, 2017

It was a tough weekend for the Broncos on the ice and on the court, with only one win by the Broncos women’s basketball team. This weekend saw the Volleyball teams on a bye before heading into their final games this season against the SAIT Trojans in Home and Home action starting in Olds at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday, February 17. As usual, the women’s game is 6:00 pm, with the men to follow at 8:00 pm. The teams are then off to Calgary on Saturday to play the Trojans.

On Saturday ensure you come by the Ralph Klein Centre to check out the ACAC Badminton Championships being hosted by Olds College. Admission to the Badminton Championships is free.

Basketball

This weekend the Broncos Women’s Basketball team had a record of one win and one loss against the rival Red Deer College Queens. The Broncos had an exciting come from behind win on Thursday night at the Ralph Klein Centre, with 4th year point guard Brianna Scott having a record breaking performance while leading the Broncos to a victory. Scott smashed the previous record of 8 three pointers in a game, nailing 11 in the game, en route to a season high 50 point performance. Remarkably, 25 of those points came in the fourth quarter, leading the Broncos from a 60 - 47 deficit going into the fourth, to a 78 - 71 final score. Scott has been a consistent scorer all season for the Broncos, scoring in double digits for all 17 previous games and for the 8th time this season scoring 29 points or more in a game.

On Saturday, the Broncos went to Red Deer and came up on the other end losing 63 - 55 to the Queens on their home court. The Broncos are now sitting in 6th place in the ACAC south with 4 games remaining.

The Red Deer College Kings were in Olds to take on the Olds College Broncos in a rare Thursday night showdown at the Ralph Klein Centre. The Broncos started strong by taking an early lead 21-12 thanks to hot shooting from Anthony Heintzman after he hit 3 of 4 shots and lead all scorers with 8pts in the 1st quarter. However the Kings came back and took a 39 - 35 lead into halftime. A 4th quarter run by the Broncos was not enough to bounce back, and the Kings took the 78 - 69 victory. Heintzman lead all scorers with 23 points, 2 steals and 6 rebounds.

Saturday Night the Broncos headed to Red Deer to face the Kings in their building but the Kings were too much for the Broncos, dropping the Broncos season record to 3 - 14 and officially knocking them out of the ACAC playoffs this year. The Broncos Basketball teams head to Caronport, SK to play the Briercrest Clippers this weekend  and you can watch live www.acactv.ca.

Hockey

The weekend did not go as planned for our Women’s hockey team, as they lost 4 - 1 on Thursday night and 9 - 2 on Saturday against the hot shooting NAIT Ooks, who lead all ACAC women’s hockey teams with 69 goals on the year. With these two losses the Broncos post season dreams will need to be wait until next season. Goal scorers on the weekend we’re Jordan Kosinsky, Chelsea Broadhead and Kelly Shawara. This upcoming weekend the Broncos can play spoiler and steal a couple points from the Grant MacEwan Griffins who are chasing the second place NAIT Ooks.

On Thursday, February 16 come out and cheer of the Broncos in their final home game of the season at the Olds Sportsplex at 7:00 pm. The Broncos then head up to Edmonton to play the Griffins Saturday, February 18.
