Broncos Weekend Wrap-Up

January 9, 2017

The Broncos were playing as underdogs this past weekend, as we met up with a powerhouse Women’s Hockey squad from NAIT, and the always dangerous RDC Kings and Queens Volleyball teams for a pair of home and home series’.

Women's Hockey

The Women’s Hockey Broncos came out strong at home against NAIT on Thursday, January 5 with a 5 – 2 victory, led by winger Chelsea Broadhead, who netted a hat trick in a dominating performance.  Broadhead opened the scoring 7:27 into the first period on a goal assisted by Jordan Kosinsky and Lisa Campeau. She scored two more early in the third period, one a mere 39 seconds into play, assisted by Tori Chenier and Hanna Matchett, and netted her third, unassisted, at 2:11.

The Broncos other two goals were scored by Faith Volk (assisted by Sinja Paurat) and Tori Chenier (assisted by Hanna Matchett & Dana Hauck).  Goaltender Nikki Grandinetti made an impressive 21 saves.

The two teams faced off again on Saturday in Edmonton, this time with the 2nd place Ooks overcoming our Broncos by a score of 5 – 1. NAIT held control for much of the game, firing 47 shots at our Broncos, with our lone goal coming in the third period, on the powerplay, by Dana Hauck, assisted by Chelsea Broadhead and Hanna Matchett.

The Women’s Broncos team will be in action this Thursday at the Olds Sportsplex, hosting the MacEwan University Griffins. Puck drop is at 7:00, and action can be seen live online at

Men's and Women's Volleyball

Our Volleyball squads had a difficult weekend against the Red Deer College Kings and Queens.  The Broncos made the trek up to Red Deer on Friday, January 6, while both teams made a strong effort, came up short in 3-0 losses (Women - 25-14, 25-14, 25-9, Men - 25-11, 25-19, 25-14). The result was similar upon returning home for games on Saturday, with the RDC squads taking both Men’s and Women’s matches 3-0 again (Women - 25-12, 25-10, 25-18, Men - 25-17, 25-6, 25-18).

On a positive note, Women’s team setter Jamie Craig had an impressive 20 assists over the weekend, with outside hitter Janelle Neyron recording 12 kills. Waylon Auger of the Men’s squad had an impressive game on Friday, leading the team with kills (9), assists (17) and digs (4), and finished the weekend with 30 assists.
